Wednesday, July 1, 7:00-8:30pm

This workshop will be facilitated by Annie Frazer and is part of the Charis Urban Sustainability Series.

Amanda C. Gable with The Confederate General Rides North
Thursday, July 30, 7:30-9:00pm
Join us at Charis for a book party celebrating Amanda C. Gable's debut novel, The Confederate General Rides North, in which eleven-year-old Katherine McConnell-a precocious Civil War buff-often imagines herself a general, leading troops to battle on her pony. When her mother wakes her one morning in the summer of 1968 to begin an impromptu road trip from Georgia to points north, Kat sees the opportunity for adventure and a respite from her parents' troubled marriage. But as they travel, Kat's experiences test her faith in her mother and her loyalty to the South, bringing her to a difficult new awareness of her family and the history she reveres. When their journey comes to an abrupt halt in Gettysburg and Kat faces the threat of real tragedy, she must make an irrevocable choice about where their ultimate destination-and her loyalty-lies.
A former Charis Circle board member, Amanda has published short stories in The North American Review, The Crescent Review, Kalliope, Sinister Wisdom, Hurricane Alice, and elsewhere, and has been awarded several residency fellowships. A native of Marietta, she lives in Decatur, Georgia. Come join her at Charis for this special book celebration, including food, fun, and an author Q & A.
